Four Years of Open Source FiftyOne!

Four years ago, on August 11, we launched open source FiftyOne, a tool to help Visual AI builders refine their data and models in one place.

Since then, the community momentum has been incredible! Thank you to everyone in the FiftyOne community for all that you do–everything from trying out the project to filing feature requests to squashing bugs, contributing code to helping fellow developers. Open source software like this doesn’t happen without the support of an awesome community behind it. 🙌💪

With that, it’s time to celebrate! Here’s a snapshot of accomplishments and milestones in the open source community since FiftyOne turned three a year ago. 🥳

Celebrating the thriving FiftyOne community

In the past year, the FiftyOne community has continued to experience tremendous growth! This surge in adoption and contributions is a testament to the power and promise of the role of open source FiftyOne in advancing Visual AI. FiftyOne’s mission to help Visual AI builders curate high-quality datasets and build high-performing models is clearly resonating with developers, researchers, scientists, and innovators around the world.

Here are just a few key milestones that demonstrate the incredible community momentum behind FiftyOne. 🚀

8,000+ GitHub stars

FiftyOne crossed 8,000 stars on GitHub! This is two times the number of stars in just 12 months. Thank you to all our stargazers and the entire FiftyOne community for being on this journey with us! If you haven’t yet but want to show your support, we’d love it if you’d pop a golden star on the FiftyOne repo! ⭐

100+ open source contributors

FiftyOne crossed 100 contributors! Contributors help drive new features and innovations, detect and fix bugs, and take part in the global community that is helping make Visual AI a reality. Ready to make a contribution? Check out our contributor documentation on how to get started. 🏁

3,000+ community Slack members

More than 3000 engineers and scientists are now members of the open source FiftyOne Slack community! This means more than 1000 new people joined in the last year alone. The FiftyOne Slack community is the place to ask questions, answer questions, and follow along with the discussions all about building Visual AI solutions. Join in! 🧡

26,000+ members in our AI + CV Meetups

We’re thrilled that 26,000+ people are now members of the Computer Vision and AI Meetup networks sponsored by Voxel51. If you haven’t yet, join a Meetup group closest to your time zone. If you’d like to speak, reach out here. 🌐🎙️

Celebrating community members’ success

We love hearing how FiftyOne helps people solve challenges and reach new heights! That’s why we celebrate success stories all year long. 🎉

As of today, you can find 20+ success stories from users around the world about how FiftyOne helps accelerate their Visual AI projects and bring remarkable AI solutions to life. Like this one:

“With FiftyOne, we are able to very quickly find errors and optimizations specific to our dataset. This enables us to shift our focus from data management to tasks like maximizing FPS in inference or accelerating the time it takes to bring a model to market.”

— Taavi Tammiste, Co-Founder/CTO at Fyma

Is your company using FiftyOne to solve interesting Visual AI problems? Share your success story and claim a box of community rewards as a thank you! You’ll be in great company!

Celebrating innovation across 15 new releases of FiftyOne

In the past 12 months, FiftyOne has had 15 new releases! Plus, we closed more than 1200 PRs, made nearly 3000 commits, and packed tons of new goodies into open source FiftyOne to help data science, computer vision, and machine learning pros build Visual AI systems faster and more easily.

While we love all the features in FiftyOne, here are a few feature highlights from the past year:

  • Native support for full 3D scenes: FiftyOne’s 3D support includes meshes (GLTF, OBJ, PLY, STL, FBX), point clouds, and 3D geometries composed of boxes, spheres, cylinders, and planes.
  • Custom Workspaces: This feature allows you to create custom panel layouts in the FiftyOne App and persist them to your dataset so that you can load your favorite workspaces later with a single click or function call. Need an embeddings visualization workspace? A model evaluation workspace? Or a custom workspace composed of panels from your own plugins? Custom Workspaces is the answer!
  • A year of FiftyOne Plugins: FiftyOne Plugins like these examples (or any plugin you can dream up!) make it possible to perform AI/ML workflows natively in the App rather than having to write code.

In addition, FiftyOne integrates naturally with other ML tools that you know and love. In the past 12 months, we added many new integrations to make your AI/ML workflows even more streamlined. 🧩

But wait … there’s more

FiftyOne has always been award-winning in our hearts and minds, but now it’s official. Earlier this year, FiftyOne was named a winner in the 2024 Artificial Intelligence Excellence Awards! 🏆

In addition, Voxel51, the company behind the open source FiftyOne toolset, raised $30M in series B funding! The new financing is helping us accelerate the FiftyOne roadmap and continue to transform the way that AI engineers and teams build visual AI. Each and every contribution has helped us achieve this milestone—thank you! 🚀

Finally, while this post celebrates four years of open source FiftyOne, the commercial FiftyOne Teams solution also has something to celebrate: FiftyOne Teams just turned three! In late July 2021, we began working with dozens of startups and Fortune 500 enterprises as early adopters of FiftyOne Teams. If you’re not yet familiar, FiftyOne Teams builds extends FiftyOne with enterprise-ready collaboration, security, flexibility, automation, and world-class support that AI teams need. ✨

Join in!

A big shout out and thank you to everyone in the FiftyOne community for all your support! If you haven’t already, join the thousands of engineers and data scientists already using FiftyOne to solve some of the most challenging problems in computer vision today. The FiftyOne community is open to all and we always have room for more amazing people! Consider joining the community of:
