🔁 Annotation Workflows: Orchestrate labeling across your team
Labeling at scale is a team sport. Coordinating who labels what, who reviews it, and what happens to rejected work has traditionally meant spreadsheets and round-trips to external annotation tools. New in FiftyOne Enterprise 2.21.0, Annotation Workflows turn any dataset or saved view into a managed, multi-stage labeling effort. No CVAT or Labelbox round-trip required!
A visual pipeline editor: Build annotate-and-review pipelines on a node-graph canvas in the new Annotate tab. Start from templates like Human-in-the-loop or Two-tier review (a second sign-off for high-stakes labeling), or design your own from a blank canvas. Clone a workflow to iterate without disrupting an active run.
Tasks and assignment: Starting a workflow generates tasks for each stage’s assignees, with role-aware permissions. Everyone sees their share under My Tasks, with per-sample progress and one click into a locked labeling view of just their assigned samples.
Approve, reject, loop back: Review stages have Accepted and Rejected branches. Wire the Rejected branch back to an Annotate stage and rejected samples are automatically re-queued until every label is approved.
Discuss on the sample itself: Sample-level comment threads let annotators and reviewers resolve questions inline — on any sample, in or out of a task.
🎬 Video annotation goes GA: Label object tracks, right in the App
Video annotation is now generally available in the App: annotate and review object tracks across video frames without round-tripping your video data to a separate tool. These features are part of the open source FiftyOne 1.18.0 release and are included in Enterprise.
Object tracks with keyframes: Mark keyframes where an object moves or changes and linear interpolation fills in the frames in between, with a live preview of your tracks as you scrub the timeline. No more labeling every frame by hand.
SAM2-assisted tracking: Draw a box or mask and let SAM2-powered tracking propagate it across the object’s trajectory. When tracking drifts, add a corrective keyframe and tracking resumes from there.
Temporal events: Annotate events with a start and an end, unlocking action recognition and temporal captioning workflows for VLA (vision-language-action) development.
3D annotation, refined: Cuboid editing previews, face resizing, and stable camera focus. Pllus fixes for undo on Windows, stale selections when entering annotate mode, and 3D label bleed into grouped 2D views.
Some of the most important things to flag in video live in time, not in any single frame. This release introduces temporal tags, plus a rebuilt playback experience that makes time-based work feel fluid.
Tag across time ranges: Apply tags to samples and frames across time ranges, so events with a beginning and an end are captured as such.
A rebuilt playback engine: The App’s playback engine and timeline have been rebuilt for smoother scrubbing and more responsive review.
Ready for Enterprise workflows: FiftyOne Enterprise 2.21.0 adds temporal tags support for time-based labeling.
🗂️ Annotation schemas in the App: Consistent labels, by construction
In 2.19.0 we introduced Annotation Ontologies. These are append-only, versioned schemas for your labels and their attributes. This release brings schema management directly into the App.
Manage schemas in the App: Define and manage attribute schemas and class taxonomies directly in the App.
Smart annotation forms: Annotation forms are driven by your schema and pair naturally with conditional attributes, so annotators see only the fields that matter for the class they’re labeling.
Consistent by construction: Every annotation task on a field offers exactly the classes and attributes your ontology defines, keeping labels consistent across annotators, datasets, and teams.
🛠️ Quality of life: faster App startup, new embeddings, and Transformers 5.x
This release also includes a batch of targeted improvements that make everyday workflows smoother for both users and developers.
Faster App startup: The embeddings, histogram, and map panels now load on demand for a lighter initial load — plus smoother panel opening, clearer loading states, and more responsive sidebar filtering.
Qwen3-VL video embeddings: New embed_frames support for Qwen3-VL lets you embed in-memory video frame clips.
Transformers 5.x compatibility: The SigLIP and MedSigLIP models in the Model Zoo now run on Transformers 5.x.
Core improvements: Datasets now persist their media type, and imports are faster thanks to loading protobuf only when needed.

Frequently asked questions
What's new in FiftyOne Enterprise 2.21.0?
FiftyOne Enterprise 2.21.0 adds Annotation Workflows for orchestrating labeling across a team, generally available video annotation with object tracks and temporal events, temporal tags for time-based labeling, and in-App annotation schemas. It includes everything in the open source FiftyOne 1.18.0 release plus Enterprise-exclusive features.
Which 2.21.0 features are Enterprise-only, and which are open source?
The Enterprise-only features are Annotation Workflows, tasks and assignment, review and rework loops, and sample discussions. Video annotation, temporal tags, annotation schemas, and faster App startup ship in open source FiftyOne 1.18.0 and are also included in Enterprise.
Is video annotation available in open source FiftyOne?
Yes. Video annotation is generally available in the open source FiftyOne 1.18.0 release and is included in FiftyOne Enterprise. You can annotate and review object tracks across frames in the App, with keyframes, interpolation, and SAM2-assisted tracking.
Do I still need CVAT or Labelbox to annotate in FiftyOne?
No. Annotation Workflows turn any dataset or saved view into a managed, multi-stage labeling effort directly in FiftyOne Enterprise, with assignment, review, and automatic rework loops, so no CVAT or Labelbox round-trip is required.
What are temporal tags?
Temporal tags are time-based labels you apply to samples and frames across a time range, so events with a beginning and an end are captured as such. They ship in the open source 1.18.0 release on a rebuilt playback engine, with Enterprise support added in 2.21.0.
How do I get FiftyOne Enterprise 2.21.0?
FiftyOne Enterprise 2.21.0 is available now. Existing users can review the full release notes to see everything shipped, and new users can get started at voxel51.com.
